Job Description

The Senior Geotechnical and Pavement Engineer will lead the technical execution and project delivery of geotechnical and pavement engineering assignments throughout the Midwest region. This role will be responsible for supporting transportation, aviation, municipal, industrial, and commercial infrastructure projects from project pursuit through design and construction. The position requires a strong technical leader capable of developing innovative engineering solutions, managing project risks, mentoring staff, and fostering long-term client relationships.

Effectively manage projects, resources, and staff while providing expert technical guidance in geotechnical engineering across diverse projects — in both public and private sectors — and ensure strict adherence to applicable guidelines.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead geotechnical and pavement engineering projects through planning, investigation, design, construction, and project closeout phases.
  • Direct and oversee field exploration programs, coordinate testing activities, and evaluate subsurface and pavement conditions to support engineering decisions.
  • Develop engineering recommendations and design solutions that are practical, cost-effective, and constructible while meeting project objectives and client expectations.
  • Serve as the lead technical resource for complex geotechnical and pavement challenges encountered during project planning, design, and construction.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, design memoranda, specifications, calculations, and construction-related recommendations.
  • Coordinate with roadway, structural, environmental, and construction engineering teams to provide integrated project solutions.
  • Provide technical oversight during construction activities, including resolution of field-related engineering issues and evaluation of design modifications when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local agency requirements, design standards, and quality management procedures.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record for assigned projects and provide quality assurance reviews of engineering deliverables.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, resource allocations, and scope adherence to support successful project delivery and profitability.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, project engineers, and technical staff through training, technical guidance, and project oversight.
  • Support business development efforts by participating in client meetings, project pursuits, proposal preparation, technical presentations, and industry events.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with DOT agencies, municipalities, private-sector clients, contractors, and industry partners.
  • Assist with strategic growth initiatives for geotechnical and pavement engineering services throughout Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and the broader Midwest region.
  • Identify opportunities to expand technical capabilities, improve project delivery processes, and enhance service offerings within the region.
  • Support regional operations by providing specialized expertise in geotechnical engineering, pavement design, slope stability evaluations, and infrastructure asset management.

Leadership Expectations:

  • Act as a regional technical resource and subject matter expert for geotechnical and pavement engineering services.
  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, safety, quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide mentorship and knowledge transfer to strengthen the technical capabilities of the Midwest engineering team.
  • Contribute to the growth and sustainability of the geotechnical practice by supporting recruitment, staff development, client retention, and business expansion initiatives.

This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in expanding regional geotechnical and pavement engineering capabilities while supporting major transportation and infrastructure projects throughout the Midwest.

You’ll thrive here if you have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology with a minimum of 10 years of professional experience, or a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Pavement Engineering, or a related discipline with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience. Experience delivering transportation and infrastructure projects within the Midwest region is preferred.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Indiana, with the ability to obtain licensure in additional Midwest states within one year of employment.
  • Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles and practices, including planning and execution of subsurface investigations, geotechnical characterization, shallow and deep foundation design, settlement analysis, earth retention systems, embankment design, ground improvement techniques, slope stability analysis, global stability analysis, and construction engineering support.
  • Strong background in pavement engineering, including pavement condition evaluation, rehabilitation strategies, rigid and flexible pavement design, mechanistic-empirical pavement design methods, pavement materials evaluation, life-cycle cost analysis, and development of pavement recommendations for transportation and site development projects.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting field and laboratory testing results and applying engineering judgment to develop practical, cost-effective, and constructible geotechnical and pavement design recommendations.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard geotechnical and pavement engineering software for settlement analysis, slope stability, retaining structure design, pavement design, and geotechnical modeling.
  • Ability to independently review plans, specifications, geotechnical data, and pavement performance information; perform complex engineering analyses; and prepare comprehensive technical reports, design memoranda, specifications, and construction recommendations.
  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record for geotechnical and pavement design projects and providing technical oversight throughout planning, design, and construction phases.
  • Strong project management skills, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, resource planning, quality management, and coordination with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present technical findings and recommendations to clients, DOT agencies, contractors, project stakeholders, and internal teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to support client development activities, cultivate long-term client relationships, and identify opportunities for growth in geotechnical and pavement engineering services.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, technical excellence, and teamwork, with a valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the Midwest region to support project and client needs.• Extensive experience planning, managing, and interpreting geotechnical investigations, including drilling programs, subsurface exploration, laboratory testing, and geotechnical characterization of soil and rock conditions.
  • Geotechnical background including fundamental knowledge of principles of Geotechnical engineering, soil and rock mechanics, pavement engineering, and groundwater hydrology.
  • Demonstrated expertise in pavement engineering and design, including flexible and rigid pavement design, AASHTO and Mechanistic-Empirical pavement design methodologies, Pavement rehabilitation and preservation strategies, pavement condition evaluations and forensic investigations, pavement materials characterization and performance assessment, life-cycle cost analysis and pavement management principles,
  • Thorough knowledge of INDOT, ODOT, KYTC, FHWA, AASHTO, ASTM, and other applicable geotechnical and pavement engineering standards, specifications, and design guidelines.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing geotechnical reports, pavement design reports, technical specifications, special provisions, construction recommendations, and engineering calculations
  • Familiarity with AASHTO standards, local building codes, guidelines, and deliverables.
  • Ability to serve as a technical lead and Engineer of Record for geotechnical and pavement design projects, providing technical oversight throughout planning, design, and construction phases.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and be willing to travel throughout the Midwest region as needed.
  • Must be able to successfully pass background checks and obtain access clearance for government, transportation, industrial, and private-sector facilities.
  • Ability to perform occasional field work and site visits in varying terrain and weather conditions.
  • Strong multitasking, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining safety, quality, and client service standards.
