Job Description
The Assistant Structure Representative (ASR) supports Caltrans Structure Construction by assisting in the inspection, documentation, and administration of complex structural construction projects. Under the direction of the Structure Representative (SR) or Senior Construction Engineer, the ASR performs field inspection duties, verifies contract compliance, documents construction activities, and supports quality, safety, and schedule objectives for bridge and structural projects. This position plays a critical role in ensuring construction work is completed in accordance with contract plans and specifications, Caltrans manuals, and applicable safety and environmental regulations
Core Responsibilities
Perform construction inspections to assure materials and workmanship incorporated into SFOBB construction project and appurtenances are in conformity with the requirements of the Approved SFOBB plans and specifications, including approved changes. Takes appropriate action when materials and workmanship are nonconforming which may include ordering removal and replacement of non-conforming work.
Perform calculations related to the proper alignment and placement of bridge elements, establishes surveying control line and grade (elevation control) as required by established SC Practices & Procedures. Assists with calculations related to and the review of shop drawings, informational and action submittals received from SFOBB contractor.
Confer with contractors regarding compliance with plans, quality of work, construction activity and California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations. Collaborates with other SFOBB Project personnel regarding the contractor's compliance with regulatory permit agencies requirements.
Assist in identifying the need for and the preparation of SFOBB Construction Contract related documents, e.g. change orders, contract quantities and estimates, potential claim reports, letters, response to SFOBB Construction contractor’s potential claims, and RFI's. Completes daily diaries of contractor's construction activities being performed, inspections performed, tests taken, and materials placed. Develops contract quantity estimate documents at least once monthly and as materials are placed.
Assist in recording and filing project related records pertaining to construction progress including daily reports, submittals, shop drawings, monthly pay estimates, and job expenditures.
Perform verification sampling and/or tests to verify the acceptability of construction materials in accordance with American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) or California Test (CT) methods.

2 years of structures related experience
2 years coursework in an accredited university
4-year degree preferred
Caltrans experience preferred
Caltrans Structures Construction experience.
