CMT Field Technician 1

We are seeking a CMT Field Technician 1 to join our San Antonio, TX team! Come join us!

The CMT Field Technician will perform advanced laboratory testing for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), concrete, soils, and aggregates to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality standards. This role requires an experienced professional with 2+ years in the construction industry, particularly in HMA production and testing, and the ability to work independently while supporting District and Area Offices.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct material testing for HMA, concrete, soils, and aggregates in the field, laboratory, or plant.
  • Perform batching of blank and bulk samples for correction factors.
  • Ensure compliance with TxDOT HMA specifications and support quality control and production oversight.
  • Perform daily quality control and assurance sampling and testing to ensure adherence to project specifications.
  • Provide technical support to roadway personnel, addressing placement testing inquiries and performing testing.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment and ensure proper documentation of test results.
  • Abide by all company health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and manage incoming data streams, ensuring all inputs are correctly received and categorized according to established protocols.
  • Perform initial assessments on system-generated tasks and queries, applying foundational knowledge to resolve basic issues.
  • Accurately log and document all activities, maintaining detailed records for quality assurance and reporting purposes.
  • Escalate complex or unresolved issues to Level 2 specialists, providing clear and concise information to facilitate a swift resolution.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify patterns and trends, contributing to process improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to all operational guidelines and security standards to ensure data integrity and system stability.
  • Participate in regular training sessions to stay updated on new procedures, tools, and system enhancements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements:

  • 2 years of experience in the construction industry, with a focus on HMA, concrete, soils, and aggregates.
  • Proven ability to read and comprehend plans, specifications, and test procedures.
  • Working knowledge of concrete, soils, base, and asphalt pavements.
  • Experience in highway or building construction, with a history of working effectively with contractors and owners.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Current TxAPA Level 1A is required.

Technical requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other technical tools for material testing.
  • Preferred certifications: TxAPA Level 1A, 1B, SB101, SB102, and ACI Field Grade 1.
  • Knowledge of TXDOT testing procedures relating to asphalt materials.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel Spreadsheets.
  • Proficiency in preparing and documenting test result in accordance with TXDOT standards and project requirements.

Other miscellaneous qualities:

  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
  • Willingness to work day or night shifts, as well as “off hours” when needed.
  • Flexibility to transition between field testing, inspection duties, and laboratory testing responsibilities as required.
  • Availability to work up to 60 hours per week, as needed.
  • Willing to learn and work any shift that is needed.
